FAQ: What Is a Licensed Acupuncturist? How Long Has Acupuncture Been Legal in Oregon?

Acupuncture was legalized by the Oregon Legislative Assembly in regular session in 1973 (Enrolled Senate Bill 489, Chapter 451). It has been defined in the Administrative Rules of the Board of Medical Examiners as:

...an Oriental health care practice used to promote health and to treat neurological, organic, or functional disorders by the stimulation of specific points on the surface of the body by the insertion of needles. "Acupuncture" includes the treatment method of moxibustion, as well as the use of electrical, thermal, mechanical, or magnetic devices with or without needles, to stimulate acupuncture points and acupuncture meridians, and to induce acupuncture anesthesia or analgesia.

A licensed acupuncturist is a person who has met the requirements set down by the Oregon State Board of Medical Examiners, been tested by the Board, and received certification to legally practice acupuncture in the State of Oregon.
